About Us

Uyghur News Network (UNN) is an independent, non-government, digital-first news organization dedicated to producing accurate, ethical, and in-depth journalism on Uyghur issues and related global developments.

UNN was founded by Uyghur journalists with decades of experience reporting under censorship, surveillance, and political pressure. Our work is shaped by professional journalistic standards and a deep understanding of the risks faced by Uyghur communities, both inside the region and in exile.

We exist to ensure that credible, independent reporting on Uyghur lives, policies, and human rights continues — even when access is restricted and silence is imposed.

Our Mission

Our mission is to inform, document, and bear witness.

We aim to:

  • Provide reliable, fact-checked reporting from closed and heavily censored environments
  • Document human rights violations with care, accuracy, and restraint
  • Amplify voices that are often silenced or excluded
  • Preserve an independent historical record for future accountability

We believe journalism is a public service, especially for communities facing systemic repression.

What We Cover

UNN reports on:

  • Human rights developments affecting Uyghurs and other Turkic communities
  • Government policies and their social and global consequences
  • Mass detention, forced labor, surveillance, and collective punishment
  • Diaspora communities, family separation, and exile
  • Culture, language, and identity under pressure
  • International responses, policy debates, and accountability efforts

Our reporting is multilingual and designed for a global audience.

Editorial Independence

Uyghur News Network is editorially independent.

We are not affiliated with any government, political party, Uyghur advocacy organizations or corporate interest. Editorial decisions are made by journalists and guided by professional standards of accuracy, verification, fairness, and transparency.

While UNN may seek donations or grants to sustain its work, financial support does not influence editorial content, coverage priorities, or reporting outcomes.

Media in a Time of Crisis

Independent journalism serving repressed and marginalized communities faces unprecedented challenges, including surveillance, censorship, financial pressure, and digital threats.

UNN was created in response to this reality. We are committed to building a sustainable, trustworthy news platform that adapts to conditions of exile while maintaining professional integrity.

Our Vision

We envision a future in which:

  • Independent Uyghur journalism survives despite repression
  • Verified facts outlast denial and erasure
  • Communities retain access to reliable information
  • The historical record remains intact

UNN seeks to grow responsibly — expanding reach, strengthening security, and developing new formats without compromising editorial principles.

Security & Responsibility

We recognize that many of our readers, sources, and contributors face heightened risks.

UNN practices data minimization, avoids invasive tracking, and prioritizes digital security. Contributors are never required to disclose unnecessary personal information, and anonymity is respected when safety requires it.

Transparency & Accountability

UNN is committed to transparency in how we operate.

We strive to be clear about our mission, editorial standards, and data-handling practices. Errors are corrected when identified, and feedback from readers is welcomed.
